The triathlon was originally created by Mr. Jean-Luc Voisin. This was actually my first triathlon experience in Vietnam. A nice swim at the beach of Mui Ne, followed by a ‘not very flat” bicycle ride and finally a run at the beach. There are two different races:

Sprint
Open for all ages

20km mountain bike

4 km off beach run

Stamina

750m open water swim

40km mountain bike

8km off beach run (you may get really wet feet!)

It has been a while since my last blog entry. Last month I resigned from the company where I worked for nearly 9 years and started a new path in my career at a young and dynamic new company.

My new office is located near the airport and approximately 7 minutes driving from my house. Yesterday, Tuesday the 29th of April, the 7 minutes became 1.5 hours. When I left the office the streets were blocked. There was no chance that I could drive. There were hundreds of policemen on motorbikes and huge amounts of cheering people. The reason: The Beijing Olympic flame had arrived at Tan Son Nhat airport in Ho Chi Minh City.

The Vietnamese government has done all they could to make the global torch relay a success. Thousands of Vietnamese were obvious proud that for the first time in history the Olympic flame had arrived in the city.

The torch was carried from the Opera House, located in the centre of Ho Chi Minh City, to the Military Zone 7 competition hall where the official torch relay ceremony took place. The distance is approximately 12km and some prominent people, including Vietnamese officials, athletes and pop star My Tam were selected to bear the torch.

The event in Ho Chi Minh City was a great success. It was also the last leg of the Olympic flame’s global journey outside of China.

Marcel

Last Sunday was again the day of annual Terry Fox run in Saigon. Terry Fox was a Canadian who died of cancer in 1981. When he was 18 years old his right leg was amputated due to bone cancer. He wanted to create awareness of the need for cancer research which he did via the “Marathon of Hope”. Terry run 5,373 km in 143 days with one leg amputated.

The Terry Fox Run is run around the world every year to raise money for cancer research. It is non-competitive- no winners or awards, just people joining to raise money for cancer research. In Saigon runners, walkers, bicyclists and handicapped participants joined the run in the early Sunday morning. As usual it was a warm day and IMHO there was not sufficient water supply during the run. About 6500 people joined the run in Saigon which is quite a record.

Put it in your agenda and watch out for the 2008 Terry Fox run!

Imagine the snow on top of Mt Hutt in New Zealand……well, that’s not exactly what you are going to get in Vietnam. Instead of skiing on white snow you can relax and enjoy grass skiing. There is a Grass-ski recreation complex about 30 kilometers from Hanoi in Luong Son Dis. , Hoa Binh Province, with a total area of 10,000 square meters.

You can ski using special chained wheel shoes or in a sled and tickets are priced at VND 35,000 per person from Monday to Friday between April to September and VND 40,000 per person on Saturday, Sunday and holidays. Instructors are available to get you going. Enjoy the grass but don’t eat it.

For many athletes it was their first triathlon event so they didn’t know at all what to expect (which was probably better!). Many had to push their bike up hill and when we had to run through wet send many were wondering: why do I torture myself like this?

French man Marc Emile finished first on the long distance in 2 hours and 23 minutes and Rudy van Bork was the first to see the finish line for the short distance in a time of 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Van Bork is actually the second person to accomplish the channel swim, as Akkiko Izawa, a female swimmer from Japan, was the first to ever complete the task in six hours and a half in 2002. He swam from Cham island to the old town of Hoi An’s Cua Dai Beach on April 28 as part of the 5 th Cham Island Channel Swim, an annual international competition sponsored by the Hoi An Town Sports and Culture Centre.

The Dutch swimmer competed with ten Japanese and two Vietnamese rivals who were joined by about 20 volunteers on boats, kayaks and speedboats to ensure safety.

“It was a great race,” said Van Bork. “It is strange to swim in a direction with only seawater on the horizon. After several hours I start seeing some land and structures. Then I knew I could finish the adventure.”
